This book is not designed to be an indepth historical study of each passage, but instead a good summary of each Psalm in a digestable format. I enjoyed how easy the book was to follow and how it helped reveal God behind each of the Psalm's underlying themes. Overall, I enjoyed using this book as a supplement to reading through Psalms day by day.
This would be a great book to use in a study of Psalms both in a group as well as individually. Some are going to like that the Psalms are not included and some are going to think it leaves the book less complete. I prefer being able to pick my own version so it's a blessing to me.

I don't know that I'd call it basic, but it's not too complex. And really, you don't need a Phd to get good information from the psalms. But it has a good theme of looking at the Psalms with a music theme. The theme is just window dressing, but it still fits since these are the Psalms.
I guess I'm saying that you don't need to be musically inclined to understanding this and the emphesis is devotions no music. Each Psalm follows the same pattern. In one sentence it gives you the Psalm in a nutshell. Then it gives the background to the Psalm.
